Double Trouble Book Tour, Review, & Giveaway

Faith Aldridge wants answers. Bramble, Texas is the only place she can find them . . . as well as Hope, the identical twin sister she never knew she had. But the townsfolk reckon that shy city-girl Faith is really her long-lost sister Hope, back in Bramble at last. And they're fixin' to do whatever it takes to heat things up between her and Hope's long-time flame, Slate Calhoun. If that means rustling her car, spreading rumors like wildfire, and reining in some explosive secrets, well, there's no way like the Lone Star way . . .

But Slate's no fool. The woman in his truck may look like Hope, yet the way she feels in his arms is altogether new. He's determined to keep this twin in his bed and out of his heart. Trouble is, the real Hope is headed home, and she's got her own designs on Slate. If Faith wants to avoid heartbreak, she'll have to show a certain ruggedly handsome cowboy that this crazy-impossible love is worth fighting for.

THERE'S A NEW BRIDE IN TOWN!
Hope Scroggs is finally ready to get hitched. After years of sowing her wild oats, the former head cheerleader and homecoming queen has returned to Bramble, Texas, to marry her high school flame. But her perfect wedding plans are stomped to smithereens when her adoring cowboy two-steps down the aisle with someone else. Now Hope is stuck with the one man from her past she can't shake: Colt Lomax, an irresistible bad boy whose sultry kisses are hotter than the Panhandle in August . . .

Colt lives for freedom and the open road; he never gets attached, never looks back. Still, he can't forget the night of passion he once shared with Bramble's sweetheart--a night he wouldn't mind repeating. So, he piles on the Texas charm to tease the feisty beauty back into his bed, while she tries her darnedest to resist. But something unexpected is about to tie their fates together . . . and oh, baby, will it ever!

The Guardian Book Tour, Review, and Giveaway

THE RETURN OF THE HIGHLANDERS: BOOK IFour fearless warriors return to the Highlands to claim their lands and legacies. But all their trials on the battlefield can't prepare them for their greatest challenge yet: winning the hearts of four willful Scottish beauties.

PASSION IGNITED
After years of fighting abroad, Ian MacDonald comes home to find his clan in peril. To save his kin, he must right the wrongs from his past . . . and claim the bride he's long resisted.

As a young lass, Sìleas depended on Ian to play her knight in shining armor. But when his rescue attempt compromised her virtue, Ian was forced to marry against his wishes. Five years later, Sìleas has grown from an awkward girl into an independent beauty who knows she deserves better than the reluctant husband who preferred war to his wife. Now this devilishly handsome Highlander is finally falling in love. He wants a second chance with Sìleas - and he won't take no for an answer.

Margaret Mallory surprised her friends and family by abandoning her legal career—and her steady job—to write novels. At long last, she can satisfy her passion for justice by punishing the bad and rewarding the worthy—in the pages of her novels, of course.   She lives in the beautiful Pacific Northwest with her husband and their two college-age children. She would dearly love to hear from readers. You can contact her via her website at www.MargaretMallory.com.

Mandie's Thoughts-  Sileas loved Ian since she was a wee lass and when they are forced to wed when she is thirteen she couldn't be happier but Ian.... not so much. He escapes to fight a war for five years with little thought of his wife/ childhood friend. When he comes back intending on breaking off their marriage he sees what a hottie she's grown into.

I love Scottish Romance books and this one doesn't disappoint. Sileas is a strong honorable woman and many men would love to take Ian's place but her heart is only for Ian. But he's being quite a jerk so she refuses to stay if she isn't appreciated. Very sexy book and Ian and Sileas have great chemistry.

Carrots 'N' Cake: Healthy Living One Carrot and Cupcake at a Time

Carrots 'N' Cake: Healthy Living One Carrot and Cupcake at a TimeIf you've been reading this blog for a while, you may know that I (Amanda) am the Taking Time for Mommy blogger who is on a mission to lose weight. Our other bloggers are beautiful, healthy bloggers in great shape, but I have about 50 pounds to lose, so when we received the book Carrots 'N' Cake to review, I called dibs. Carrots 'N' Cake was written by fellow blogger Tina Haupert.

Tina was on her own mission to lose weight for her wedding when she started reading food blogs and following an online calorie counter, and then decided to start her own blog. Her blog has become one of the most visited food blogs on the internet. In her new book, she shares her strategies for maintaining her weight and staying fit.

As you would expect, the book is full of great recipes and workout plans, but what I really loved reading was her personal stories and her thoughts on food. She lets you get an inside look at what actually goes on in her mind throughout the day as she's eating and exercising. For example, in one section she describes a morning where she binged on fresh homemade muffins. I also like to bake, and have been there so many times. She follows it up with strategies she has discovered to help prevent binging: keeping trigger foods out of the house, not mistaking thirst for hunger, eating by the clock, not being too hard on herself, and limiting treats to planned times.

The book includes more than 50 recipes which all look fantastic, and almost all are suitable (or easily altered) for vegetarians like me. I've tried a few of them with great success. Here's the one I tried most recently:

 3-Minute Oatmeal Raisin Cookie

 Ingredients:
 1/4 cup oats
1/8 cup liquid egg whites (I used 2T water with 1/2 t Enr-g Egg Replacer)
2 t brown sugar (I used a packet of Truvia)
 2 t all-purpose flour
 1/4 t vanilla
 1/4 t baking powder
 1 T raisins
 Cinnamon to taste (I used 1/2 t)

 Directions:
Combine all ingredients in a microwave safe bowl. Scrape batter down the sides of the bowl and flatten into a cookie shape at the bottom. Place the bowl in the microwave and cook for 45 seconds on high. Allow to cool, remove from the microwave, and enjoy! (Makes 1 Giant Cookie)

The cookie was great! It's just a good thing the recipe only makes one cookie. :-)

This book is great for anyone who's interested in living a healthy life without giving up your favorite things. Tina's found a great balance between carrots and cake.

The Thirteenth Gift

The Thirteenth Gift
A Novella of Hope for all times
by Charlene Costanzo

Collecting stones is an impulse that crosses cultures and centuries. What instinct urges people world-wide to stoop for simple stones? This fourth work in Charlene Costanzo’s Twelve Gift SeriesThe Thirteenth Gift (March 2011) features, in a story-within-a story, an obscure Eastern European fable that shows: we are all trying to remember something…who we truly are.  Stones can help us remember.

Costanzo’s uplifting novella is also a cautionary tale that speaks to our times in the way it depicts the consequences of greed, arrogance, fear-mongering, and abuse of power in a culture. The story’s central character, Claire, a U.S. journalist, is one that modern women can relate to.  Claire is torn between pursing her ambitions and dedicating herself to her family. Claire also faces the choice to focus on what’s wrong in the world or to promote what is promising. While on assignment in Eastern Europe, Claire learns of local legend when she stoops for a stone. The deceptively simple story about “the thirteenth gift” has a profound affect on Claire, transforming her marriage, the way she sees the world, and her work in the world.

Charlene’s fictional narrative reinforces the importance of consciousness, community, and maintaining our inborn sense of wonderment. In a world with many distractions and dismays, it is easy to lose one’s sense of wonder. Charlene’s new book invites readers to renew their natural awe and appreciation for life and to experience greater hope, beauty, and joy in daily life.

For many years, Charlene has been collecting physical stones and sharing them as a concrete reminder to keep in touch with the gifts of life, which are illustrated in Charlene’s bestselling book, The Twelve Gifts of Birth. She also collects what she calls “touchstone stories” that demonstrate how these gifts are real and relevant in everyday life. These “touchstone stories” are described in the book’s Afterword and featured in Charlene’s new website, www.CharleneCostanzo.com.

The publication of The Thirteenth Gift coincides with the 10th anniversary re-release of The Twelve Gifts of Birth from HarperCollins. Both books will be featured at an experiential “birthday party” event held at Changing Hands in Tempe, Arizona on March 30, 2011.

About the Author:

Charlene Gorda Costanzo is an award-winning author, workshop facilitator, wife, mother, and grandmother. She holds a B.A. in Philosophy from St. Bonaventure University and an M.A. in Spiritual Psychology from the University of Santa Monica.

The Twelve Gifts series of fables began in 1987 when Charlene wrote The Twelve Gifts of Birth as a life message for her own, then teenage, daughters. Twelve years later she published the book and began to discuss its message in schools, shelters, prisons, churches, and hospitals throughout the United States.

The Twelve Gifts for Healing was written while Charlene was in treatment for advanced non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma in 2001. The Twelve Gifts in Marriage comes from the ups and downs, ebbs and flows, and hurts and healings that are part of every long-term marriage.

The Available Parent: Radical Optimism for Raising Teens and Tweens

The Available Parent: Radical Optimism for Raising Teens and TweensAs the mother of three girls who are 11, 14 and 15, I was interested to read Dr. John Duffy's new book The Available Parent: Radical Optimism for Raising Teens and Tweens. I feel like I have great relationships with my girls already, so I was a little surprised how much I learned from the book. One of my biggest problems as a parent, that I'm not always aware of, is letting go. My oldest will be 16 in a few months, and it's hard to imagine her as an adult, yet time keeps speeding by and she's ever-increasingly closing in on the age of adulthood.

The book begins with a few introductory chapters, which are followed by  three parts: "Your Teenager's Wild World", "What Always Works", and "What Never Works". Here's a quote from the introduction that kind of sets the tone for the book, and which I found particularly comforting.

"As confounding as parenting a teen can feel day to day, I want you to keep in mind that our job is actually abundantly clear. Our goal is to foster an environment that is most likely to provide a sense of competence and resilience. Competence and resilience. That's it. As long as you remember this goal when you are confronted with decisions about your adolescent, be it about discipline, bullying, school, drugs, or too much TV, your compass will be pointed in a clear direction, and you will feel increasingly comfortable with your decision-making ability, as time goes on.

Further, you need to know that you have all the influence you need to be a force in your teen's life. Recent research indicates that the vast majority of teens spend at least three times as much time with peers as with parents. Despite this statistic, research also continues to support the idea that parents remain the strongest influence in the lives of their teens by far, in both their beliefs and decision making. You remain your teen's primary role model, and you carry more influence than you may believe.

Your availability will be a function of faith that your influence in combination with her  own inner strength and wisdom, will carry your child through any challenge. [...] Open yourself up, become available, have faith in her, and slowly, perhaps very slowly, you will begin to see change. Close yourself off to the possibility of it, assume the worst about your teenager, and you are contributing rather needlessly, to a self-fulfilling, self-defeating prophecy."

Part 1: Your Teenager's Wild World covers the issues that teenagers are facing and dealing with today. Many of them we're not dealing with yet, as our children are homeschooled, but I always have in the back of my head that these things are coming, and, to tell you the truth, sometimes it scares the cr@p out of me. In this part, Dr. Duffy touches on what's going on in "the adolescent mind" as well as the natural separation that needs to happen for teenagers. There are some great tips in this part on teaching teens to understand and manage their own emotions that are inevitable as teens try to establish a unique identity for themselves and discover the type of person they strive to become.

In Part 2, the author discusses "what never works": lectures, vicarious living, micromanaging, snooping, underestimating, blinders, judging, smothering, coddling, overindulgence, bribery, "good cop bad cop", and waiting. Half of those things, I have no issues with, but I do have to admit to smothering and bribery, and before reading this book, I hadn't seen any problems with snooping or lecturing. Reading these chapters really gave me a new perspective on my own behavior as a parent.

In Part 3, Dr. Duffy offers what he proposes "always works". He begins with asking parents to check their ego at the door. "Our job is to be available, to guide them, to counsel them, and then to get out of the way to let them establish who they are, and let them be themselves." Our job is not to diagnose them, change them or put "conditions" on our love for them. As an alternative to punishments, he encourages parents to focus on their children's positive behavior and negotiate and draw up a behavior contract with a list of behaviors and their consequences every 6 months or so. Dr. Duffy goes on to ask parents to find and support their teen's strengths and interests, set a good example, and, of course, be available.

I really enjoyed this book, and think it's definitely one to read and then keep in your library to refer back to from time to time.

My thoughts - It was action packed right from the beginning. Call me a romantic but I'm not all for the one night stand thing. See, it causes nothing but trouble and boy does it! You follow Zak and Acadia's relationship as it evolves from the one night stand into something more. It was a very very sexy book and a very quick read, surprising with all of the descriptions. I will be picking up the second book when it comes out!

Bossypants by Tina Fey Book Review

Before Liz Lemon, before "Weekend Update," before "Sarah Palin," Tina Fey was just a young girl with a dream: a recurring stress dream that she was being chased through a local airport by her middle-school gym teacher. She also had a dream that one day she would be a comedian on TV.

She has seen both these dreams come true.

At last, Tina Fey's story can be told. From her youthful days as a vicious nerd to her tour of duty on Saturday Night Live; from her passionately halfhearted pursuit of physical beauty to her life as a mother eating things off the floor; from her one-sided college romance to her nearly fatal honeymoon -- from the beginning of this paragraph to this final sentence.

Tina Fey reveals all, and proves what we've all suspected: you're no one until someone calls you bossy.

(Includes Special, Never-Before-Solicited Opinions on Breastfeeding, Princesses, Photoshop, the Electoral Process, and Italian Rum Cake!)

Mandie's Thoughts - This was the most hilarious memoir I have ever read. Whether you like her or not, this is funny. REALLY funny! I've watched a little Saturday Night Live but I've never watched 30 Rock, I might now. Sarah, I mean Tina was very self depreciating at times but it gave you an honest look at who she is. She's actually pretty normal. She's a mom trying to balance her work, marriage, and child. If you have any sense of humor you NEED to pick up this book.

My thoughts -I love historical fiction and all things Scottish but I have to tell you I wanted to throw this book when I was about half way through. I was so stinkin' mad BUT then I had to remember Diccan is never a gentleman. I appreciated Grace as a strong female lead although she does have some self esteem issues because of her looks. I enjoyed this book and the author introduces secondary characters who will appear in her next book making you really really want to read it. Or at least it did me. :) This is the second book in the series, You don't have to read the first to keep up but you will probably want to!

Read an Excerpt

My thoughts - Shiver of Fear could easily have been a stand alone book but I admit by the end I wanted to read the previous and the next book. I was surprised there was so much action in the romance book while still keeping it sexy.  It was very fast paced and I think it would actually make a fantastic action movie that both my hubby and I would love to see. Devyn and Marc had incredible chemistry and the book kept me on my toes as I didn't know the ending (I'm REALLY good at guessing them) Definitely recommend for anyone looking for a good romance or mystery.

Private investigator Vivi Angelino loves living life on the edge, but stepping into the shoes of a movie starlet to bait a serial killer isn't just a thrill . . . it's a ticket to the big time for her fledgling security firm. That is, as long as a certain risk-averse FBI agent stays out of her way-and out of her fantasies.

Assistant Special Agent in Charge Colton Lang isn't above using his well-worn rulebook to stop Vivi's latest walk on the wild side. But when they learn her client is involved in something far more insidious than bad acting, Vivi and Colt must work together despite the electrifying attraction arcing between them. For each new clue is bringing them closer to a high-profile crime with a dark and deadly truth at its core . . . and a cold, calculating murderer with nothing left to lose.
                                                            Read an Excerpt

My thoughts - Vivi is my inner child. She's who I might be if I didn't have the responsibility of a family except I don't have that many issues. I might not have been a PI either but it's fun to live vicariously through her. Colton is uptight and ubber responsible. They are quite the mismatch but you know what they say, opposites attract. There personal issues could have really weighted the book down but the author made it work. it was funny and I was on the edge of my seat.

"Please God, if you're listening, keep Rachel safe." She couldn't turn her back on her family in their time of need. So when her sister was injured, financial expert Andrea Hampton traded the big city for Amish country to help turn her grandmother's house into an inn. Climb, Swing & Snuggle Reading Readiness Involves the Whole Body

Guest post by Laura Grace Weldon

Today’s children sit more than ever. Babies spend countless hours confined in car seats and carriers

rather than crawling, toddling, or being carried. As they get older, their days are often heavily scheduled

between educational activities and organized events. Most children today have twenty-five percent less time for free play than they did a generation ago, and that’s before factoring in distractions like TV or video games. Left to their own devices, children move. They hold hands and whirl in a circle till they fall down laughing. They climb, dig and run. They beg to take part in interesting tasks with adults. They snuggle. Stifling these full body needs actually impairs their ability to learn.

We know that our little ones walk and talk on their own timetables. No rewards or punishments are necessary to “teach” them. Yet children are expected to read, write, and spell starting at five and six years old as if they develop the same way at the same time. In fact, academics are pushed on preschoolers with the assumption this will make them better students. This approach is not only unnecessary. It may be contributing to problems such as “learning disorders” and “attention deficits.”

Literacy isn’t easy. It requires children to decode shapes (the alphabet) into sounds and words, to remember these words correctly in written and spoken form, and to understand their meaning. Allowing reading to develop naturally or teaching it later tends to create eager, lifelong readers. In contrast, teaching children to read early, between four and seven years, is often stressful. Why? Children pushed to read young tend to rely on right brain processes because that area matures more quickly. These early readers are likely to guess at unknown words using clues such as appearance, context, beginning and ending letters. Their main tactic is memorizing sight words. These are valuable methods but not a balanced approach to reading. Such children may quickly tire after reading short passages or read smoothly but have difficulty deriving meaning from what they read. The procedure they use to decode words can make the content hard to comprehend. These reading problems can persist.

However children benefit when they learn to read naturally or are taught later. That’s because, as the left brain matures and the pathway between both hemispheres develops, it becomes easier for them to sound out words, to visualize meanings and mentally tinker with abstractions. They memorize short sight words but sound out longer words, an approach that is less taxing. As they incorporate more words into their reading vocabulary they more easily picture and understand what they are reading.

In order for children to read, write, and spell, they must be developmentally ready. Some are ready at the age of four or five, some not for many more years. This readiness includes complex neurological pathways and kinesthetic awareness. Such readiness isn’t created by workbooks or computer programs. It’s the result of brain maturation as well as rich experiences found in bodily sensation and movement.

These experiences happen as children play and work. This includes expansive movements such as climbing, jumping, digging, swimming, playing hopscotch and catch, riding bikes, sweeping, running. It also includes fine movements such as chopping vegetables, drawing, building, using scissors, and playing in sand. And it includes the essential growth that comes from snuggling, listening to stories, singing, trying new tastes, playing rhyming and clapping
games, enjoying make believe. Children are drawn to such experiences. Without them, they won’t have a strong foundation for learning.

These activities stimulate the child’s brain to develop new neural pathways. Such activities also build confidence, smooth sensory processing, and create a bank of direct experience that helps the child visualize abstract concepts. Well- intended adults may think a good use of a rainy afternoon is a long car ride to an educational exhibit. A young child is likely to derive more developmental value (and fun) from stomping in puddles and digging in mud followed by play time in the tub.

There are many other factors contributing to reading readiness. Perhaps most important is a supportive family life where reading and conversation are an enjoyable part of each day. But it helps to remember that young children want to participate in the purposeful work of making meals, fixing what’s broken, and planting the garden. They also need free time without the built-in entertainment of specialized toys, television, or video games so they can explore,
pretend, and play games. These direct experiences prepare children for the magic found when shapes become words, words become stories, and they become readers.

Freebie Alert - Free kindle version of She walks in beauty

She Walks in Beauty
Mitchell (Love's Pursuit) sets her newest historical in Gilded Age New York, an opulent time and place when marrow spoons and exceedingly tight corsets were in vogue among the moneyed. The motherless Clara Carter is making her debut in society, and her aunt and her physician father expect her to win the hand of Franklin DeVries, the wealthiest catch of the season. Clara's best friend Lizzie is also aiming for DeVries, and Clara is caught between duty, friendship, and her own desires, which tend more toward Byron's poetry than bombazine hats.

Mitchell's story is well researched, with fascinating details, and Clara is a complex character. The plot machinery creaks loudly at points: three overheard conversations is at least one too many. A social consciousness plot thread dealing with New York's slums is weak. But those who love historicals can have their fill as well as any debutante supping on oysters and clutching her filled dance card; Mitchell delivers the historical goods.
